Good Health Is Elementaryby Janet Booth
This information is not intended to prescribe nor to replace medical treatment.
Today, most people of a “scientific mind” consider the ancient Greek astrologers and philosophers rather primitive. Yet they were actually onto something quite profound with the importance and yet the simplicity of the four elements. If you have a sufficiency of what these elements represent, you should be in balance and be whole (or hale, the root of the word healthy).
EARTH Ashes to ashes, dust in the wind. We’re material beings, though we’re much more than just matter. Earth relates to the corporeal (real?) portion of us and the ground of our being, as well as our being grounded. Earth signs in our chart help us keep our feet on the ground. Consuming the right matter and minerals is essential for health. You are what you eat (see the entry for FIRE below). When we think of illness, we mostly consider the physical variety, but metaphysics teaches us that there are four bodies: ethereal or spiritual, mental, emotional and physical – like the four elements! Dis-ease really begins on the invisible levels first and lastly manifests in the physical body. This shows the importance of all the elements.
AIR From our first breath to our last, we depend on air. We can go quite a while without food, but not long without air. There are people who don’t eat and who subsist on air, called Breatharians. 1 Symbolically, air is related to thought and consciousness (although we still breathe when we’re unconscious) and to communication (think of sound waves traveling through the air). The purity of our thoughts and our air affect our well-being (or lack thereof). The content of our communications and even the nature of the sounds (their vibrational qualities) we make as we speak have an impact on both the speaker and the listener.
WATER We’re comprised of a very high percentage of water in our every cell, just as our globe consists of a high percentage of water. The quality of the water we consume can’t help but affect the quality of our wholeness. Water is indicative of our emotions, too, which need to be at ease or we can become dis-eased. If you saw the excellent film “What the Bleep Do We Know!?”, you were no doubt struck by the experiments conducted by Dr. Emoto showing the effect of emotions directed at water. Water that was told “I love you” formed beautiful crystal-shaped molecules, while water that was told “I hate you” formed irregular and raggedy-shaped molecules. So our emotions have a strong affect on our well-being and on our environment. 2
FIRE Fire is representative of spirit, that which was, is and will be, enduring beyond the body and the limitations of what we can feel and conceive. It’s about energy, which we need to function. And it relates to light, without which there would be no life on this planet. If we say we get our energy from food, what we’re really ingesting is light that has been stored in some form, either by plants or by animals that ate plants or other animals that ate plants – somewhere in the chain, the light and the plants were involved. When we hit a spiritual peak, we say we are enlightened. When we feel too heavy, people tell us to lighten up. As much as we think we’re made of matter, we do not exist without the fire element. Consider these keywords for the fire sign Aries: “I am.” The “I” indicates the individual ego while ”am” represents existence. In spiritual systems (Hindu, Judeo-Christian), the godforce is sometimes described as the Great “I am.”
The mathematical principle of Occam’s Razor (“the simplest solution is the best.”) applies well to the four elements as a prescription for good health.
1 The web site Second-Opinions.co.uk in discussing vegetarians, tells us ”breatharians believe they can survive without eating at all, getting the nutrients and energy their bodies need from the air they breathe.”
2 A blogger called Gabatron posted this comment on the WhatTheBleep.com guestbook on 5/10/05: The water crystal experiment has been very extensive. I have seen the fact findings and the presentation from Dr. Emoto. The experiment is in a controlled environment and the facts are facts. The water doesn't turn in to a snow flake at random. The experiments show that with repetition of same intent they get the same formation in the crystal. Then utilizing images of things not only words for intent the water forms to the picture. Have you ever seen water form to look like an elephant? I have and I did not mold it myself out of snow. Beyond repetition the point has been proven. Just see the studies and books. Just like the movie says. Check it out to see for yourself. These are the facts. The water takes on the replica of what is presented to it. If you have further inquiries please see Dr. Emoto's books they tell the story.
